What, sushi? Sushi is Japanese, not Chinese. ;)

Also, veg rolls are a totally American thing. I believe most of the rolls are an American thing, actually--or at least the ones w/ rice on the outside. Ditto ANYTHING cooked. So if you were in Japan and asked for it as they make it, you'd get raw fish. They eat a lot of fish in Japan (for obvious reasons!).

They also do sushi in Japan without fish!

My opinion is you could handle this a bit more graciously. You asked your sister if you could bring your own dish. She has her plans and doesn't want interference. She has already told you she is preparing some vegetarian dishes so it looks to me like she is being considerate. Remember you are a guest in her home and she is inviting you. It's completely unacceptable as a guest to impose your views or preferences on the host/ess. If you do not wish to attend, you can send a nice thank you letter for the invitation put politely decline. Having an angry attitude towards your sister is going to be more dangerous to you than a not-so-mcdougall meal, in my opinion.

Kind of a good thing this thread has been resurrected, I had forgotten all about it, but we are coming upon Easter time and maybe some people will benefit from it.

Also, I can take the opportunity to correct ETeSelle's comments on sushi :D

The word "sushi" doesn't refer to fish, it refers to the rice and it's seasoning with vinegar.

Raw fish by itself is referred to as "sashimi."

The Japanese have always eaten veggie sushi, particularly with cucumber. It is very unusual though for someone to eat only veggie sushi, like I used to do when I went to a sushi bar with my ex-girlfriend. I used to always worry that the sushi chefs resented me taking up a chair eating just the cheap stuff!

Really surprised to see this thread resurrected! I am getting along fine with my sister; we had our ups and downs last summer at the family beach house when she first went on the Dukan diet, but we just don't talk about our diets now and it's fine.

Oh, and I can't agree that I should eat any vegetarian dish (or someone else's idea of a vegetarian dish) if I am trying to stick to a certain WOE. What happens with me often is I am going along fine, then someone sticks something I shouldn't have under my nose, I have some, then it's like a runaway train and it takes me awhile to get back on track. I need to be strict with myself, and if that means not eating baked ziti with dairy cheese or whatever, then that is what I have to do.

The best thing my sister ever made for us was lentil soup. It was totally fat free and vegan, and I have made that recipe many times since. Like most sisters, we have had our ups and downs through the years, but we are close and we love each other a lot. I just wish she wouldn't eat so much meat, but I know I can't say that to her or WWIII will break out.
